Preparing Your Home for Guests
Getting your home ready for an exchange helps ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for both you and your guests. Here are some key steps to consider before your visitors arrive:
Create a Home & Local Guide
Provide a welcome binder or digital file with instructions for appliances, garbage and recycling schedules, Wi-Fi/TV access, garden or pet care, emergency contacts, and recommendations for local attractions, restaurants, and events. This helps guests feel comfortable and reduces the number of questions during their stay.
Clean & Declutter
Clean thoroughly, remove all garbage, and clear out the fridge leftovers. Lock away valuables, and provide fresh linens, towels, and basic supplies. A clean, welcoming space sets a positive first impression.
Arrange Key & Access Details
Decide how guests will access your home—meet in person, leave keys with a neighbor, or use a lockbox or smart lock. Always provide at least two contact numbers in case of delays or questions. Clear instructions help prevent stress for both parties.
Safety & Emergency Preparedness
Check that smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers are functioning. Provide a first-aid kit and outline emergency procedures. Guests will appreciate your attention to their safety.
Stock Essentials & Comfort Items
Make sure basics like toiletries, coffee, tea, and kitchen essentials are available. Small touches like extra blankets, pillows, or a few toys for families can make your home feel extra welcoming.
Does MHTS Offer Insurance?
No, we don’t provide insurance. We recommend home, renters, auto, and travel insurance. Knowing you’re insured provides peace of mind.
Communicate House Rules Clearly
Make sure guests know your expectations before arrival, such as quiet hours, smoking or pet policies, and any restrictions on areas of the home. Clear communication helps avoid misunderstandings and ensures everyone has a positive experience.
Check Appliances & Home Systems
Test all major appliances, heating/cooling, plumbing, and electrical systems before guests arrive. Make sure everything is in good working order, and leave simple troubleshooting instructions if needed. This reduces the chance of surprises or inconvenience for guests.
